Alan
Knowles BSc
Fencing Instructor
I started fencing in 1981 at
the age of 10 and have been taught by Steve Glaister, Les Jones and Herman du
Preez. I currently fence epee and still compete in this weapon on a regular
basis. In my youth I fenced foil and sabre and competed in these as well. This
depth of competitive fencing has allowed considerable insight in to fencing and
how to teach the art. The Art and Science of Fencing is still as entertaining
to me now as it was when I was young, there is always something new to learn.
I have been teaching fencing since 1988 as an amateur and in 2003 I became
professional. Since becoming professional I have gained level 4 master coaching
qualifications in foil, epee and sabre (this is the highest level in the
English fencing stardards).
I am currently Head Coach at Swindon Fencing Club as well as coaching at
several well known clubs and schools in the area. Between 1989 and 1996 I held
the posts of Chairman, Coach and Team Captain at Bradford University Fencing
Club.
I am currently Wiltshire County Champion in Epee, and I have represented the
North-West Region and the Southern Region at the Winton cup and represented
Wiltshire for foil and epee.
